Exfoliating Your Way to Smooth Clearer Skin

Like petals, skin cells naturally shed on a daily basis ultimately revealing a new layer of skin roughly every 28 days – this process is called desquamation. Desquamation is affected by lifestyle, sun exposure, the natural aging process, and other environmental factors. Through desquamation, the skin’s appearance is improved exposing fresh new cells. This natural process prevents excessive dryness to the skin and other skin conditions that cause may affect its appearance and texture.

There are a number of ways to accelerate the process of desquamation. These generally involve the exfoliation of the outer-most layer of the skin (epidermis – stratumcorneum). Skin exfoliation techniques can be adapted dependant on the skin’s thickness (density) and sensitivity:

Mechanical Exfoliation

  • Topical skin scrubs, e.g apricot kernel, jojoba or sugar grain scrubs – recommended up to 1-3 times a week.
  • Facial flannels – gentle enough for daily use.
  • Skin abrasive treatments, e.g. diamond dermabrasion – can be received once a week for problem skin or as a monthly skin maintenance service.

Chemical Exfoliation

  • Skin cleansers, e.g BABOR Enzyme Cleanser – gentle enough for daily use.
  • Exfoliating serums and creams, e.g DOCTOR BABOR A16 Booster Concentrate – these are usually retinol or AHA acid based for gentle yet effective management of pigment-related issues.
  • Skin peel treatments – these are usually AHA acid based for a powerful treatment that improves the appearance of scars, fine lines and pigment-related issues.

Exfoliating the skin regularly improves its blood circulation, its overall tone, texture and complexion, also helping to regulate sebum production [the skin’s natural lubricant]. Exfoliation also removes debris from the epidermis preventing blocked pores that can be the result of various forms of facial and body acne. Skin issues like pigmentation, scars, dull skin complexion, premature skin aging caused by dehydration can be controlled and dramatically reduced through regular skin exfoliation suited to the skin-type. Skin exfoliation also acts as a gentle massage to awake and stimulate the underlying musculature relaxing tight superficial muscles and improving their contours.

When it comes to facial and body hair removal, skin exfoliation is a great prevention and control for bumps and other skin irritations caused by ingrowing hairs. Individuals with thicker skins or coarse hair tend to be the victims of these annoying breakouts; exfoliating the skin at least 24 hours before waxing, shaving or any other form of hair removal unblocks pores preventing new hairs that are growing from curling up under the skin.

Full body exfoliation is one of the most effective ways of maintaining a healthy complexion and tan throughout the year. It helps you achieve a healthy and even tan that lasts longer which means you won’t have to top-up your tan as frequently! We recommend that you book yourself in for a Shaping Body Peel for a magnesium-enriched full body exfoliation at least a day before your tan or body wax treatment.

All the listed products are available for purchase from our online shop and at our treatment facility.

When the skin has been properly exfoliated, treatment serums, moisturizing lotions and creams that are applied topically will be more easily absorbed by the freshly exposed skin cells promoting better skin hydration levels and elasticity – this also helps to normalize the skin’s natural protective barrier making it more resilient to damage.

  • Clear blackheads and whiteheads – an effective way to prevent further breakouts.
  • Get rid of fine lines, wrinkles and any facial puffiness – collagen and elastin skin cells are stimulated to smooth-out the skin.
  • Reduce the visibility of atrophic scars and stretch marks – a course of 6-12 treatments is recommended.
  • Reduce the visibility of superficial hyper-pigmentation – a course of 6-10 treatments is recommended.
  • Remove excessive dry dull skin from any part of the body –  a great treatment to have after a heavy night out or before a special occasion.

Although the service is safe to receive, it is worth noting that certain conditions will affect whether or not it is safe for you to receive a service. If you suffer from, or have had any of the following , diamond micro-dermabrasion could aggravate or worsen your situation:

  • Herpes Simplex, Hepatitis B or any other viral diseases
  • Diabetic conditions and keloid scarring
  • Recent laser surgery, chemical peels, hypersensitive skin or tactile skin sensation
  • Acne Rosacea or broken capillaries as the skin is delicate
  • Taking anti-coagulation drugs to treat cardiovascular conditions
  • Using Retinol or Retin A products or roacceutane medication
  • Recent injectable cosmetic treatments
  • Pregnancy

When can I except to see results?

With diamond dermabrasion, you can expect to see results from your first treatment – with a removal of 0.06mm (superficial) to 0.45mm (medium) of dead skin cells from a single service. The exfoliation process of this service works to exfoliate up to 4 layers into the skin depending on what condition the skin is being treated for. As the skin continuously renews and repairs itself, its condition will also gradually improve over time. With this in mind, you can expect to see an improvement in your skin’s appearance up to 6 months after a service. Monthly services are encouraged to maintain a healthy natural skin barrier, especially where facial shaving is involved and for mature skin.

Are there any other benefits from receiving a diamond dermabrasion treatment?

Other benefits to expect from having a treatment include…

  • An improvement in circulation with a glowing and radiant complexion from an increased oxygen and nutrient transportation to the skin’s cells.
  • Less facial puffiness from an improved localised blood and lymphatic circulation and drainage.
  • Improvement of skin texture and smoothness caused excessive shaving and razor bumps.
  • A natural skin tightening effect from the stimulation of the skin’s collagen and elastin cells from a cellular rejuvenation effect on the skin and its underlying layers – these naturally slow down as we age.
  • This treatment has a short down-time period which means you can get back to work immediately after a treatment (only for mild to medium intensity).
  • Cost effective compared to other treatments like laser, with noticeable results up to a month+ (dependant on treatment intensity and how many treatments are acquired).
  • No risk of adverse skin reaction or ingestion of crystals as the treatment is a crystal-free process (unlike crystal micro-dermabrasion).
  • Suitable for anyone regardless of skin color ethnicity.

How often can I have a treatment?

Your first diamond dermabrasion treatment will remove excess dead skin cells and sebum, making the skin appear brighter and healthier, whatever the skin type; the more treatments you have – the better your skin will appear! We would normally recommend a weekly to monthly service depending on what skin condition you want to treat. A course of 6-10 services is generally recommended every 7-14 days for faster and more noticeable results – book a course of 5 or more treatments and receive a 25% discount!

A course of 2 diamond dermabrasion treatments received over 28 days to treat hyper-pigmentation and acne scarring.

Are there any side effects after receiving a service?

It is normal to experience signs of redness (erythema), dryness, mild skin bleeding or itching after you have had a diamond micro-dermabrasion treatment. We strongly advise to avoid scratching the skin if itching occurs; we highly recommend using soothing and nourishing skincare preparations after any diamond micro-dermabrasion service to subside any contra-actions that may occur after your treatment. We retail a select range of BABOR’s Skinovage PX products which support a safer skin healing process. BABOR’s Skinovage products offer individual solutions for the daily care of dry, sensitive, combination, blemished skin or skin in need of regenration, long-after you have received your treatment.

After you have had a diamond micro-dermabrasion treatment:

  • Avoid excessive UV exposure (sunbeds) for up to 7 days to prevent sunburn.
  • Always wearing a UV sunscreen on exposure to sunlight prevents skin irritation from an increase in sensitivity.
  • Avoid wearing a full face of makeup for 24 hours hours after your treatment. We recommend wearing mineral makeup instead as it can help aid the skin’s natural healing process.
  • Avoid the use of heated services, self/spray tan application and excessive physical activities like gym workouts for at least 48 hours to prevent skin sensitization.

If ever in doubt about whether or not diamond dermabrasion is the right treatment for you, get in touch with us and we will be happy to assist you with your inquiry.

UNDERSTANDING HAIR REMOVAL

Hair Removal – Pros and Cons

Hair Removal is a widely popular service, not only in the beauty world but also across different cultures and professions with a plethora of benefits to be experienced.

Hair removal techniques today are available in many forms offering temporary or permanent hair removal, to include, depilatory waxing and machines, sugaring, depilatory creams, abrasive mitts, shaving, plucking or tweezing, threading, and electrical current methods like Intensed Pulsed Light (IPL) and laser hair removal, to name a few.

Hair Removal Across the World

Forms of hair removal are practised for various and mostly cultural, sexual, medical or religious reasons – here are some we managed to dig up:

  • Culture – In Middle Eastern societies, removal of the female body hair has been considered proper hygiene, necessitated by local customs, for many centuries. An increase in women wearing shorter dresses and swimsuits over the years has raised the practice of women removing unwanted body hair, such as on legs, underarms and elsewhere. People also remove some or all of their pubic hair for aesthetic or sexual reasons. Many men in Western cultures shave or wax their facial hair to achieve a clean-shaven or hairless look. Some men shave or wax because they cannot grow a “full” beard (generally defined as an even density from cheeks to neck), because their beard colour is different from their scalp hair colour, or because their facial hair grows in many directions, making a groomed look difficult. Some men shave or wax because their beards are very coarse, causing itchiness and irritation. Some men are known to eliminate or trim pubic hair, a practice that is referred to as “manscaping” (a portmanteau expression for male-specific grooming); this custom can be motivated by reasons of potentially increased cleanliness and hygiene, heightened enjoyment during fellatio and analingus, and/or the desire to take on a more youthful appearance.
  • For professional footballers, road cyclists and swimmers – The absence of the leg hair means the injuries (usually skin rash or scarring) can be cleaned up more efficiently, and treatment is not impeded in the case of a crash or tackle. Professional cyclists, as well as professional footballers also receive regular leg massages, and the absence of hair reduces the friction and increases their comfort and effectiveness. It is also common for competitive swimmers to shave hair off their legs, arms, and torsos, to reduce drag and provide a heightened “feel” for the water by removing the exterior layer of skin along with the body hair.
  • In the military – A close-cropped or completely shaven haircut is common in military organisations preventing the infestation of lice, ticks, and fleas. It is also more difficult for an enemy to grab hold of a soldier’s hair in hand-to-hand combat. In addition, short hair makes fitting gas masks and helmets easier. The practice also serves to cultivate a group oriented environment through the process of removing exterior signs of individuality. In many military, head-shaving is mandatory for males when beginning their training. Armies may also require males to maintain clean-shaven faces as facial hair can prevent an air-tight seal between the face and breathing or safety equipment, such as a pilot’s oxygen mask, a diver’s mask, or a soldier’s gas mask.
  • Medical reasons Surgical patients are required to have no hair in areas to be treated before surgery in attempts to eradicate lice and minimise body odour due to accumulation of odour-causing micro-organisms in hair. It is common for cancer patients to shave their heads even before starting chemotherapy as it often causes severe and irregular hair loss. In extreme situations people may need to remove all body hair to prevent or combat infestation by lice, fleas and other parasites. Such a practice was used, for example, in Ancient Egypt. Waxing offers expectant mothers an excellent hair removal method that acts as a preparatory step before child-birth with results that last for weeks after for peace-of-mind.

With permanent hair removal methods, regular visits are encouraged to effectively destroy the hair roots which are responsible for the growth of the hairs in the treated areas. Although permanent hair removal treatments like IPL provide faster permanent hair results, a course of treatments is usually recommended and can be quite expensive however competitively priced, with some salons and dermatologists requiring that hair is shaved or shortened in the areas to be treated.

Outback Organics Opal Wax for facial, underarms and intimate waxing.

Temporary hair removal treatments such as waxing and threading are the most widely available services on the high street offering cost effective treatments and convenience of use. Waxing and threading treatments remove hairs at their roots so the regrowth is of completely new hairs with soft, fine-tapered tips. Regrowth of hair can be expected again between 4-5 weeks.

Waxing and threading can also appear to reduce the quantity of hair growth due to the natural cyclical regrowth of the hair – this only means that the hair will not all grow back at the same time. Certain bodily changes such as ageing can result in permanent hair removal with waxing and threading.

We, at Endulge Therapy, aim to make your waxing experience as natural, and as pleasant as possible. We use award winning Outback Organics products for all our threading and waxing treatments, not only for their efforts in supporting the Australian Indigenous people, but because their entire product range is free from parabens, mineral oils, artificial fragrances, animal by-products and other harmful chemicals. We use the deliciously scented plum-based Opal peelable wax when waxing the face, smaller areas of the body, and for the hair down under. Freshly scented True blue gel wax is used when waxing larger areas of the body for speedy and clean waxing results.

Shavers, depilatory creams and abrasive mitts come in a variety of forms offering other cost effective methods of temporary hair removal that can be performed at home. These methods of hair removal involve the removal of unwanted hairs at the surface of the skin.

When using depilatory creams at home, we recommend not to use these on sensitive areas, like the groin and underarms as these creams are usually heavily alkaline based which can result in an instability of the natural pH level of the skin, giving rise to severe breakouts and skin discoloration. If you have thick course hairs in these sensitive parts, we strongly advise against shaving in these areas as you are most prone to suffering with these conditions as a result from friction to the areas – consider waxing instead please and be kind to your skin!

Things To Know Before Booking Your Waxing Appointment

Receiving a wax for the first time can be a little daunting and painful at the beginning but becomes less painful when you keep up with your appointments. It is useful to know that some slight soreness, small bumps and redness are common and perfectly normal temporary reactions, especially if this is your first wax experience. These symptoms usually subside over the 24-48 hours following your treatment. We advise that you get in touch with us if you experience any persistent redness or irritation. We usually advise that you allow at least one week, preferably two, between any home shaving or other depilatory service to let the hairs grow to a length sufficient to be waxed.

A woman’s pain threshold is at its lowest immediately before and during her period as the hormones which stimulate the regrowth of hair are also at there most active during this period. For these reasons, we advise to avoid waxing at this time if possible.

Preparation before a wax is of the utmost importance! Exfoliating your skin before your wax treatment also ensures that any trapped hairs are exposed for a better wax. Dead skin cells are also removed from your skin, promoting better hydration levels for your skin. Book in for a Shaping Body Peel treatment before your wax appointment for an invigorating yet relaxing skin smoothing body treat with an added anti-ageing effect. Other gentle ways to exfoliate at home are by using exfoliating mitts or gloves up to 3 times a week prior to your waxing appointment. For a 2 in 1 wash and skin exfoliator, Outback Organics do a great Face and Body creamy scrub, enriched with Bergamot orange, sandalwood, patchouli, rose and organic cucumber extract combined with jojoba micro-beads to give a gentle yet effective exfoliation that leaves your skin soft, hydrated and deeply cleansed.

If you use retin-A products or are taking a course of tetracycline medication, we advise that you wait at least a month before after to attend a waxing appointment as these products are known to cause more sensitivity to the skin making it more prone to irritation and tear.

Bush Balm 250ml £22.00, Face and Body Scrub 100ml £8.99, Post Wax/Shaving Spray – 100ml £10.00 / 250ml £15.98.

On the day of your wax appointment, we recommend that you wear loose fitting clothes to prevent friction and allow for proper circulation and healing for the areas to be waxed – this means no sport, gym or other vigorous exercises after your appointment! It is also important to keep the waxed areas clean, avoiding heat from hot baths or showers, saunas or hot tubs, and tanning of any kind. To cool and calm the skin after a wax treatment, we recommend the use of Aloe Vera or Outback Organics Post Wax Spray to the legs, arms, chest and back twice daily for 5 days. For sensitive areas such as the face, underarms and bikini area, we recommend using a small amount of Outback Organics Bush Balm 2-3 times a day until all redness and soreness has subsided – don’t let us leave you without your complimentary Bush Balm sample after your underarm and intimate wax treatment!

Showering daily using an antiseptic skin wash such as Outback Organics Tea Tree Skin Wash is a perfect way to cleanse the pores, helping to eliminate bacteria that cause spots without stripping or drying the skin. This skin wash double-up as an excellent facial wash for anyone who prefers using a facial wash than a cream cleanser; oily skin is controlled and vitality is restored revealing fresher and more vibrant skin without leaving it feeling taught and dry.

Face and Body Wash – 100ml £7.50 / 250ml £9.99, Tea Tree Deodorant 30ml £4.99, Hand and Body Lotion – 100ml £7.50 / 250ml £12.50.

A great wax is never complete without some added moisture! Follow-up your wax with a good moisturiser enriched with vitamin E such as Outback Organics Hand and Body Lotion. This lotion is rich in anisata and macadamia oil that acts to quench and sooth dry, itchy skin even after hair removal leaving the skin silky soft, supple and deeply hydrated enabling the new hairs to grow through easily.

You may notice a small amount of regrowth after a week or so; please bare in mind that it can take up to 4 treatments for the hair to get on a cycle that gives the best results. In some cases, an angled follicle may cause the hair to break off at the angle during waxing which also causes hairs to reappear at the skin’s surface within a few days of a wax treatment. This can result to the regrowth of hairs to be frizzy or curled where previously they were straight. We advise that you avoid shaving, tweezing or use of hair removal creams between appointments as this interrupts the hairs removal growth cycle. To maintain your smooth appearance, we recommend regular waxing treatments every 4-6 weeks.

Take advantage of our 3 for 2 waxing special offer and save money on your waxing treatments with us throughout June! To book your wax appointment, or for more advise on our waxing services, call us on 02380 111 621.

Benefits Of Having a Manicure or Pedicure Treatment

Manicures and pedicures are hot this season with GELeration manicures and pedicures in high demand in the warmer months. At Endulge Therapy, we use Jessica Nail Systems for their ethos and world-class natural nail care service. Jessica Vartoughian is a pioneer in the professional nail care industry as she was the first to recognise that like skin and hair, all nails are not alike as well, identifying the four different nail types – damaged, dry, brittle or normal – and creating specific treatments for each type. Nails require individualised treatments depending on the type of nails and their condition.

Beautiful nails are an expression of who you are and portray confidence and power – results are well worth the time spent!

A few key points to note about manicures and pedicures:

  • They improve the appearance of your skin and nails.
  • They keep your nails and skin healthy by preventing nasty infections.
  • They promote healthy nail growth by improving blood circulation.
  • They reduce hard skin improving the sensation of touch.

Here is a great example of one of our clients suffering from Onychomycosis (ring worm of the nail) and athlete’s foot. This lovely lady had lost all hope in reviving her distressed nails and skin. A Deluxe GELeration Pedicure treatment (RRP £40.00) was recommended to improve blood circulation whilst promoting healthy skin and nail growth. Jessica’s GELeration gel polishes also offer a chip-free and longer lasting nail colour wear whilst concealing any nail imperfections for a smooth and beautiful super glossy finish. GELeration colour in Shock Me Red.

Onychomycosis – a whitish opaque ringworm nail infection that causes brittle nails eventually lifting the natural nail plate providing ideal surroundings for fungi.

Our gorgeous client was sent home with Jessica’s Phenomen Oil (RRP £9.50), Revitalising Citrus Foot Spray (RRP £8.25) and Antifungal Treatment (RRP £18.25) to treat her condition between the toes and behind the nails whilst adding essensial nutrients for healthy nail and skin growth.

£8.00 for Phenomen Oil if purchased with any nail care service. Offer not to be used in conjunction with any other offer.

A Healthy Body is a Healthy Skin!

At Endulge Therapy, we believe that a healthy body is a heatthy skin meaning proper nutrition is of the utmost importance. We recommend a nutritionally balanced diet to prevent a number of skin allergies that surface as a result of poor nutrition. A balanced diet acts not only to nourish the cells for a healthy looking body and skin but to support active cell growth and repair. A daily diet of fruits, proteins, vegetables, milk or yoghurt and nut oils like hemp seed and rapeseed oil are examples of foods that make up a healthy balanced diet.

oil

Don’t forget the all-important water – it makes up about two-thirds of our body weight and is a vital component both inside and outside the body cells. Water is essential for growth, temperature regulation, waste removal, and general maintenance and hydration for our body cells. Aim to drink at least 2 litres of water a day regardless of the season. We like Volvic’s Natural Mineral water because it’s smooth in the mouth with enough minerals to keep you going through the day without the metallic mineral taste.

water

We understand that it can be difficult avoiding guilty pleasures like alcohol and caffeine in today’s times but by keeping their consumption to a bare-minimum will prevent you depriving your body of its essential vitamin reserves that are necessary for a healthy skin. Alcohol and caffeine dehydrate the body and skin aggravating conditions such as acne, rosacea, eczema and psoriasis. Excessive consumption of alcohol and caffeine interferes with proper digestion and blocks the absorption of vitamins and minerals whilst dehydrating the body cells and stimulating the skin aging process. You don’t actually need Caffeine in an excess of more than 3 cups of coffee or tea a day! For a healthier glowing skin, opt for caffeine free drinks or food high in potassium, magnesium and vitamin B complexes such as shellfish, liver, dark chocolate, baobab powder and avocados.

extracts

Last but not least is the most crucial – SLEEP! For the mind and body to function and absorb nutrients effectively, it needs to rest. Stress through lack of enough rest or sleep (insomnia) is shown in the face as tension lines when facial muscles are tighter than normal preventing healthy blood and nutrient circulation. As a result, the skin becomes dull in some cases causing a sluggish skin condition with dark circles beneath the eyes. Too much sleep can also cause puffiness – because the circulation is less active, the body fluids form puffy deposits under the skin. Stress and anxiety are most notably the underlying cause of certain skin conditions like psoriasis and eczema. We believe exercise and pure relaxation come hand in hand and are effective ways of maintaining a healthy immune system and metabolism. For cheap and effective ways to exercise, take up running, yoga or simply play your favorite tunes and have a super-boogie for at least 45 minutes every 2 days – you will feel a lot happier and healthier for it. Our range of mobile facial and body massage treatments are designed to induce relaxation right from the core – superb for insomnia sufferers.
